English Support on Delivery Apps

Can you navigate food delivery apps in English worldwide? From native English countries to zero-English markets — the complete breakdown with translation tips.

The Language Barrier in Food Delivery

Finding the right delivery app is only half the battle. Can you actually read the menu? Can you communicate with the driver? Can you navigate the payment screen? Language support varies dramatically across delivery apps, and even within the same app in different countries.

This guide categorizes every major delivery market by English support level, so you know exactly what to expect before you land.

Native English Countries

UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore

No language barriers at all. All apps operate natively in English. Menu items, delivery instructions, customer support, and driver communication are all in English. In Singapore, English is one of the official languages, and all delivery apps (Grab, Foodpanda, Deliveroo) operate in English natively.

Excellent English Support

These countries have delivery apps with strong English interfaces and generally English-literate drivers.

Philippines

English is widely spoken. GrabFood, Foodpanda, and local apps all have English interfaces. Menu items are often in English or Taglish (Tagalog-English mix). Drivers frequently speak conversational English. One of the easiest non-native-English countries for delivery.

India

Swiggy and Zomato both have full English interfaces. Menu items are in English (Indian restaurants commonly use English names). Driver communication may be in Hindi or local languages, but app-based chat handles most situations. Customer support is available in English.

Netherlands & Scandinavia

Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish populations have near-universal English proficiency. Uber Eats, Deliveroo (NL), Wolt, and Foodora all offer English interfaces. Menu items may be in the local language but with English descriptions on major apps. Drivers often speak excellent English.

UAE & Qatar

English is the de facto business language of the UAE. All delivery apps (Talabat, Deliveroo, Careem, Uber Eats) have full English support. Menu items are in English or bilingual. Drivers are often South Asian expats who speak English. The UAE is one of the easiest countries for English-speaking food delivery.

Malaysia

English proficiency is high, especially in urban areas. Grab has a full English interface. Menu items are commonly in English or Malay (which uses Latin script). Drivers in KL and Penang often speak basic English.

Good English on Major Apps

Major international apps work in English, but local apps and restaurant menus may be in the local language.

Most of Europe

Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Glovo, and Wolt all offer English interfaces across Europe. In France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Croatia, and Poland, you can use these apps in English. However, restaurant names and menu items are typically in the local language. Photos on menus help enormously. Drivers may not speak English, but app-based communication minimizes this issue.

Thailand

Grab has an English interface and is the best option for English-speaking tourists. Line Man is primarily in Thai. Foodpanda has English support. Menu items are often in Thai but with photos. Drivers rarely speak English but GPS-based delivery reduces the need for communication. See our Thailand guide.

Taiwan

Uber Eats Taiwan has an English interface. Foodpanda has partial English support. Menu items are commonly in Chinese. Younger Taiwanese have good English skills, and drivers in Taipei may speak basic English. Using the map pin feature to set your location avoids most language issues.

Indonesia

Grab Indonesia has an English interface. GoFood (Gojek) has partial English support. Menu items are typically in Indonesian (which uses Latin script, making it readable). Drivers in Bali and Jakarta tourist areas may speak basic English. In-app communication handles most situations.

Photos Are Your Best Friend

Even when menu text is in a foreign language, food photos help you know what you are ordering. On apps like Uber Eats, Grab, and Foodpanda, most restaurants include photos with their menu items. Filter for restaurants with photos if you cannot read the menu language.

Limited English Support

International apps may work in English, but local apps and driver communication are in the local language.

Japan

Uber Eats Japan has full English support — it is the exception in Japan's delivery landscape. All other apps (Demae-can, menu, Wolt Japan) are primarily or entirely in Japanese. Menu items are in Japanese even on Uber Eats, though restaurant names are sometimes transliterated. Drivers do not speak English but rarely need to communicate. See our Japan guide.

South Korea

Uber Eats Seoul has an English interface but limited restaurant coverage. Baemin (the dominant app) is entirely in Korean — menus, interface, customer support, everything. Coupang Eats is also Korean-only. Google Translate's camera feature is essential for navigating Korean delivery apps. Drivers do not speak English.

Turkey

Uber Eats (where available) has English support. Yemeksepeti is primarily in Turkish. Getir has partial English support. Menu items are in Turkish. Drivers rarely speak English. In tourist areas of Istanbul, some drivers have basic English.

Brazil

Uber Eats Brazil has English support. iFood is primarily in Portuguese. Menu items are in Portuguese. Drivers rarely speak English. Customer support on iFood is Portuguese-only. In Rio and Sao Paulo, some restaurant staff may speak basic English, but the apps are not designed for English speakers.

No English Support

These markets have delivery apps with virtually no English interface or support.

China

Meituan and Ele.me are entirely in Chinese — interface, menus, customer support, driver communication, everything. There is no English language option. Even addresses must be entered in Chinese characters. Uber Eats does not operate in China. Google Translate's camera function is your only tool, but the apps' complex interfaces make even translated navigation difficult. Ask a Chinese-speaking friend, hotel staff, or use the hotel concierge.

China Is the Hardest Market for English Speakers

China combines zero English support with payment barriers (WeChat Pay/Alipay required) and local phone number requirements. It is the most difficult delivery market for English-speaking tourists. Your best option is to ask your hotel concierge or a local friend to order on your behalf.

Translation Tools for Delivery Apps

Google Translate Camera

The most useful tool for navigating non-English delivery apps. Point your phone camera at the screen and see real-time translations. Works best with Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, and Arabic scripts. Not perfect for food-specific terminology but very helpful for navigation.

Apple Translate

Built into iOS, Apple Translate can translate text on-screen through the share sheet. Useful for copying menu item names and pasting them for translation.

Papago (Korean)

For Korean, Papago (by Naver) is significantly more accurate than Google Translate. It understands Korean food terminology better and is essential for navigating Baemin.

DeepL

DeepL offers superior translation quality for European languages. If you are navigating a German, French, or Italian delivery app, DeepL gives more natural translations than Google Translate.

Download Translation Packs Offline

Google Translate and Apple Translate both allow offline language packs. Download the language pack for your destination country before you travel. This ensures translation works even without internet, which is useful for navigating apps while you set up your local SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

In most countries, yes — if you use Uber Eats. It has English interfaces worldwide. In Southeast Asia, Grab also has excellent English. However, in China (no Uber Eats), South Korea (Baemin is Korean-only), and on local apps in Japan, you will need translation tools or a local friend to help order. Menu items may be in the local language even on English-interface apps.

Uber Eats has the best global English support. Deliveroo, Wolt, and Grab also offer strong English interfaces. DoorDash (US/Canada/Australia) is natively English. Local apps like Meituan (China), Baemin (Korea), Demae-can (Japan), and iFood (Brazil) have minimal to no English support.

Yes. Google Translate's camera feature can translate app screens in real time, which is especially helpful for Japanese, Korean, and Chinese apps. For Korean specifically, Papago (by Naver) provides more accurate food-related translations. Download offline language packs before you travel.

Uber Eats is the best choice for non-local speakers in virtually every country where it operates. It has English interfaces, photo-rich menus, GPS-based delivery (minimizing driver communication), and English customer support. In Southeast Asia, Grab is an equally good English-friendly option.
